What happens when you say “I love you” in a language that isn’t your own? Does it feel the same? What about anger, humor, or fighting fair?
In this engaging and thought-provoking lesson, students explore the hidden challenges of intercultural relationships through the story of an Austrian-German speaker and her Australian husband. From a hilarious misunderstanding about “love handles” to the accidental use of a certain C-word, students discover how language shapes our emotions, our humor, and even the balance of power between partners.
This lesson is inspired by Magdalena Hoeller’s insightful and funny TED Talk, “Why Love Is Harder in a Second Language.”
Students will develop:
- Listening comprehension skills through authentic video content about intercultural relationships, misunderstandings, and hidden language challenges
- Speaking fluency via structured discussions about love, humor, power dynamics, and personal experiences with language differences
- Vocabulary acquisition of essential relationship and language-related terms (intercultural, emotionally charged, emotionally detached, flawless, misdirected, superficial, disheartened, proficient, tricky)
- Personal response skills through reflection on their own experiences with miscommunication, feeling less funny in a second language, and building a shared “microculture”
Your students will leave the classroom not only with new vocabulary but also with a deeper understanding of how language shapes the way we love, laugh, and connect across cultures.
