What if your students could design their own experiment to sleep better, focus longer, or boost their energy? What if they could debate whether taking 50 supplements a day is brilliant science or dangerous obsession? This 90-minute lesson plan invites intermediate and upper-intermediate learners into the fascinating world of biohacking – the practice of taking control of your own biology to upgrade health, performance, and well-being.
Inspired by the ABC Science video “What is biohacking? Meet the biohacker who refuses to age,” this lesson introduces students to the three levels of biohacking, from simple lifestyle changes to .extreme grinder practices. Students will explore the ideas of a real biohacker who types 150 words per minute, reads 1,000 words per minute, and believes he might never have to die. Through engaging reading, video comprehension, vocabulary work, and lively discussion, learners will develop critical thinking, expand their academic vocabulary, and practice expressing and defending opinions.
Throughout the lesson, students will:
- Discuss the concept of self-improvement and the limits of self-experimentation
- Read a detailed text about the three levels of biohacking
- Categorize real biohacking activities into lifestyle, technology, and grinder levels
- Watch and analyze a video about a man who treats his body as an ongoing experiment
- Complete two vocabulary gap-fill tasks using key topic-related vocabulary (intentional, wearable, track, adjust, fasting, boost, obsessed, upgrade, well-being)
- Design their own simple biohacking experiment, applying scientific thinking to personal health
Perfect for teachers looking to bring contemporary science, critical thinking, and real-world relevance into the classroom.
